DROP THE "SHOULDS" - A NEW PERSPECTIVE
It's so easy to feel overwhelmed by "shoulds" (have-to's, gotta's, and "oh s#@!, what NOW's"). If your To-do list is as long as your arm (or both arms - or yikes - both arms and one leg) then you know what I'm talking about.
"Shoulds" are pesky. Like leaves in Fall - they're everywhere. They are the obligations that stress you out and knot you up - and they multiply!
When I'm in the "shoulding-on-myself" mode I feel like I use 200% of my energy - and get next to nothing done. My thinking isn't clear, my emotions get knotted up - and even the things I do finish don't give me satisfaction...sigh.
But "shoulds" are part of the landscape - they're there - what can you do? I'm not an advocate of dumping responsibilities or obligations (well, ok..maybe sometimes I am - we all need mental health days).
So the real question is: how can we work with our "shoulds", while taking the stress and confusing mental and emotional knots out of the picture?
Perspective-shifts! That's the key - it's all about changing perspective. When we see our "shoulds" from different angles we get a fuller (and clearer) picture of them. When you change your perspective you still have those same responsibilities - but you diffuse them of their negative power (you take the "should" out of them). The emotional knots and resulting confusion surrounding the obligation fall away. The "shoulds" drop like leaves from trees in Fall.
With perspective-shifts you can play with your "shoulds". It's like the difference between a boring old time raking up leaves that should be taken care of - and jumping in leaf piles, having a leaf fight and playing while raking. One way is "shoulding", while the other is fun and energizing - and yet they both get the job done.
When we aren't "shouldng" on ourselves, when we look at our "shoulds" objectively we wind up working smarter, not harder.
We can make better decisions because we're not trying to think through an emotional knot - and that can even help us get more done (ironic, huh?).
Does the idea of perspective-shifting - moving toward a lighter feeling, clearer thinking, some energizing play - and maybe even getting more done to boot sound good to you?
